About me
Tywana Fulford is the PreK - 5 Mathematics Specialist at Open Up Resources. She devotes her career to helping children find their love for math. Tywana has been in education for almost 20 years with a bachelors in Mathematics Education from Florida A&M University and a masters degree in Technology Education from National University. As a young girl Tywana knew exactly what she wanted to do and how she wanted to do it, she wanted to teach. She spent many years in the classroom changing the lives of young children encouraging them to embrace math. She hated the phrase “I’m not good at math” and made it her duty to change that perspective. She felt inspired to help those students that were labeled as below average learners because she felt that not all teachers spoke their language. The key to teaching is to build relationships first and then the doors of the mind will open. Tywana was nominated to participate in a focus group to help African American males succeed in mathematics. Year after year, this subgroup performed at a high rate and others wanted to know how and what was she doing. Her students knew that she cared and wanted them to succeed, she built relationships.
Tywana’s career expanded from teaching in the classroom, to supporting math educators in implementing instruction in the classroom to now developing math curriculums. She works effortlessly in creating curriculums where the voices of students are heard and ALL children will see themselves as Mathematicians. Let’s speak their language.
Not only does Tywana devote her life to education, she is very family oriented. She enjoys spending time with her three sons and husband. She often reflects that she is raising three black men that are going to change the world. She also loves to craft and has been labeled as the “creative one” in her family.
